Grant terms, in plain words

The terms you meet on an SEAI solar PV and battery grant application, each in a sentence or two.

Free, no obligation. One local SEAI-registered installer prices it, not five.

0% VAT on Domestic Solar Supply & Fit

Since May 2023, the supply and installation of solar panels (and batteries installed in the same contract) on private Irish homes carries a zero percent VAT rate.

8-Month Grant Offer Validity

Once SEAI issues your solar PV grant offer, you and your registered installer have 8 months to complete the installation, carry out the post-works BER, and submit the declaration of works.

Clean Export Guarantee (CEG)

Ireland's microgeneration export payment framework under which electricity suppliers pay homeowners per kWh for surplus solar electricity exported to the grid through a smart meter.

DC Isolator & Fireman's Switch

Safety disconnection devices required by Irish electrical standards (IS 10101 / SEAI Code of Practice) to isolate high-voltage DC solar cables between the roof array and the inverter.

Home Battery Grant (€600 for 5kWh+)

An additional €600 SEAI grant for installing a home battery storage system of at least 5kWh usable capacity, bringing the maximum combined solar PV and battery grant to €2,400.

Hot Water Diverter (Immersion Controller)

An optional proportional power controller that diverts surplus solar electricity into your hot water immersion cylinder before exporting to the grid.

Hybrid Inverter vs String Inverter

A standard string inverter converts DC power from solar panels into 230V AC household electricity; a hybrid inverter also manages charging and discharging a DC-coupled home battery.

kWp (Kilowatt Peak) vs kWh (Kilowatt-Hour)

kWp measures the peak power rating of your solar panels under standard sunlight (around 6 to 7 modern panels equal 2.6–3.0kWp), whereas kWh measures the actual electricity generated or stored over time.

LiFePO4 (Lithium Iron Phosphate) Battery

The standard chemistry used in modern Irish domestic solar batteries (typically 5kWh to 10kWh), known for long cycle life, thermal stability, and deep discharge capability.

NC6 Microgeneration Notification Form

The mandatory ESB Networks notification submitted by your SEAI-registered solar installer at least 20 working days (4 weeks) before installation, registering your inverter connection to the grid.

Post-Works BER Assessment

An SEAI-registered BER assessment completed after your solar panels are commissioned. It is mandatory to release grant payment, though no minimum BER grade is required for the standalone solar grant.

Pre-2025 Dwelling Age Rule

SEAI's solar electricity grant is open to owners of homes built and occupied before 2025, detected via the property's ESB Networks MPRN connection date.

PVGIS Satellite Solar Yield

The European Commission's Photovoltaic Geographical Information System, which models annual kWh output per kWp across Irish counties based on historical solar irradiation and roof pitch.

Qualifying Welfare Solar PV Rate (Up to €9,000)

A higher SEAI solar PV grant rate for homeowners receiving a qualifying Department of Social Protection payment such as Fuel Allowance, paying €3,350/kWp up to 2kWp and €850/kWp from 2kWp to 4kWp (€8,400 cap) plus €600 for a 5kWh+ battery.

SEAI Solar PV Grant (€700/kWp & €200/kWp)

SEAI's Better Energy Homes grant for domestic rooftop solar photovoltaics: €700 per kWp for the first 2kWp (€1,400) and €200 per additional kWp up to 4kWp, capping the panel grant at €1,800.

Your solar grant in 3 taps

Tap your home, the size of system and whether you want a battery. Your SEAI grant and a cost after the grant show as you go. Then, if you want a price, leave your number and one SEAI-registered solar installer who covers your area rings you.

What kind of home is it?

SEAI's grant is for homes built and occupied before 2025.

By sending, you agree to Solar Panels Grant passing your details to one SEAI-registered solar installer who covers your area, so they can contact you about the job. solarpanelsgrant.ie is not SEAI or a government body and does not award grants. Privacy notice
